‘Bird’ has a new home: the Lincoln Park Zoo. And I couldn’t be more exhilarated.

The paint came out and the delivery went well but this is only the beginning. Looking at the exhibition map I was reminded of what an honor it is that ‘Bird’ is featured prominently on the graphic design for this exhibit.  I have personal tour coming up on 6/10/15 and the opening on 6/18/15.  Come join me.

Read about the development of the show, the trials of the install day, and how I conceptualized ‘Bird': http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/ct-lincoln-park-zoo-sculptures-20150514-column.html

New Studio: Old Love

Rented my own Studio recently and I’m still in the process of setting it up, all good things in time they say. But recently one of my studio mates lent me his old TIG welder. The generousity of this community and my workplace are making me truly humble,, and inspiring me to find ways to do the same for others.

New art on the way soon. Yet, as stated earlier, all good things in time.

Thank you Mike.

“Amplifiers” : Nicole Beck fabrication

Since June Vector has been working hard to make Nicole Beck’s homage to the LED a reality. In a commission for University of Illinois Urbana Nicole has developed these forms from the wave form that LED’s emit, with stainless steel and colored glass to bring the piece to life.

I have been hard at work welding, fitting, and grinding the surfaces to a near perfection in preparation to go off to the sandblasters. After which Nicole Beck will come into the shop to create her specific pattern of mark which will cover the surface. I can’t state enough how excited and proud I am to be working on a piece of this scale and complexity.

Menu Tightening – Elements / Process

I have decided to keep all process related materials in the blog, thus I have removed the process shots and information for the “Tree” and “Elements” from the main page.

I am moving the content here for “Elements / Process”, so that anyone who wants to see it can. Enjoy.

_____

Elements / Process

Paper and cardboard,   Water: 2′ x 1′ x 7″    Air: 2.5′ x 1.5′ x 10″    Earth: 3′ x 7″ x 6″   Fire: 2′ x 20″ x 1.5′

These models are in production and form a set of twelve pieces, with each form being repeated three times. The inspiration for these pieces is from a primal redefining of the elements, fire, water, wind, and earth.

Using my unique style I made forms that evoked the weight and movement of the element that they were defining. The interior curve of each piece will be colored a corresponding color to define that element, also this color field will be striking as the form wraps around itself making the static lines seem alive.

Tree / Process

Tape and cardboard,   10′ x 5′ x 4′

A model for a project that I will be making in the future, this piece is based on the movement of a tree while keeping with my love of sharp lines and curves defining not only itself but also the world around it.  I am envisioning this piece made with stainless steel, and only the inside curve facing the viewer made of crude steel to show a contrast between the rust and shine in the different steels.

The public relation and marketing agency Fleishman Hillard has had a long time connection to Art St louis.  Allowing artists to show in a space in there agency for exposure.  I recently had the opportunity to show there and grabbed that by the horns.  For the next couple months the “Elements” will be displayed there, so if your in the neighborhood feel free to check them out.

Static Flow Reception

On December 2nd my friends and family joined me for a day of celebration—the opening of my sculpture show at Componere Gallery in St Louis MO.  With wine and cheese greeting guests at the door, I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to show my just completed and recent work.  “I-IV” is a new set of interpretations of the four elements—all variations on the geometry of a cube. The finish is an oil rub designed to bring the edges and angles into focus. “Elements” is my prior exploration of the four elements (earth, air, fire and water) formed from sheet stainless steel, hand-hammered, welded and painted. A set of “Elements” was purchased in October and now makes its home in Wyoming. The pieces looked fantastic all together in a bright and beautiful gallery setting.

The show will be up for the rest of the month and I encourage anyone that has the opportunity to check it out and tell me what you think!

An Artists Recption

Tonight at the Bell Street Gallery I found that Madeleine Island is not only a fantastic environment in which to show my sculptures, but also the hospitality of this island exceeded all expectations.  At my artist’s reception tonight, wine was flowing, guitars and singing was abound and people showed in good force despite the light snow.

I cannot be happier with my pieces resilience to the environment all summer and into the fall and look forward to bringing more sculpture up to this humble location.  Time is the only factor now as I am already churning away on new ideas and ready to get back to the grind stone with my new pieces in the future.

Came across this light hearted tutorial about the Korean Language. I was inspired when I discovered how such simple lines convey complex idea. Might be a great platform for my attempts to create my own language.
